Book Meme!

So I'm at home resting, and it feels great. Then, at 2.15, Ultrasound appointment at the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh. What worries me though is that my tummy is reasonably quiet after having been put on a gluten and dairy free diet for the last 20 hours. This means I would need to sustain it at least for the time I'm in London, which should not be too difficult given [livejournal.com profile] angelofthenorth's stashes of gluten-free goodies.
Hardback or Paperback? Paperback is more affordable, hardback is more beautiful. I'm usually too mean to but hardback, except when they are radically discounted.

Highlight or Underline? Highlight sparingly, using yellow highlighter, in textbooks and papers I own. So much easier to review the gist of it after some time.

Lewis or Tolkien? Undecided
E.B. White or A.A. Milne? Don't know White.
T.S. Eliot or e.e. cummings? Haven't read enough of either of them to judge.
Stephen King or Dean Koontz? That sort of fiction doesn't interest me - I hate horror stories and stories with bad endings. I read "Firestarter" by King, and that sodding book haunts me to this day. I hate books that do that to me.

Barnes & Noble or Borders? There's no B&N in the UK, and Borders has Starbucks and a wide selection of Magazines. On balance though, I'd say Blackwell's.

Waldenbooks or B. Dalton? erm? I like Half-Price Books and Powell's.

Fantasy or Science Fiction? Neither, really.

Horror or Suspense? Neither. Whodunnits are more my thing.

Bookmark or Dogear? Bookmark.

Hemingway or Faulkner? Haven't read enough of either. Probably Hemingway, though - I like my prose kinda succinct.

Fitzgerald or Steinbeck? Haven't read enough of either.

Homer or Plato? Plato's great.

Geoffrey Chaucer or Edmund Spenser? Chaucer.

Pen or Pencil? fineliner or a proper pen, not ballpoint.

Looseleaf or Notepad? Notepad. with margin, small spacing of lines, and holes for moving to folders.

Alphabetize: By Author or By Title? By subject, then by author.

Dustjacket: On or Off? Off.

Novella or Epic? Hmmm - epics.

John Grisham or Scott Turow? Never read either.

J.K. Rowling or Lemony Snicket? Rowling.

John Irving or John Updike? Neither. Fiction or Non-fiction? Non-fiction, definitely. I've pretty much stopped reading fiction. Either it's badly written and so feels like a waste of my time, or it has a tragic ending and haunts me for ages.

Historical Biography or Historical Romance? I actually quite like Historical Biography. Now if I only could find the time to finish any of the works I have ...

A Few Pages per Sitting or Finish at Least a Chapter? Chapter. I like the closure. Except when I'm in bed, and I'm tired ...

Short Story or Creative Non-fiction Essay? Well-written non-fiction anytime. "It was a dark and stormy night" or "Once upon a time"? Dark and stormy night.

Buy or Borrow? Buy, but I can't really afford it so I'm trying to move towards borrowing. (gacked verbatim from [livejournal.com profile] ladyvorkosigan - I feel the same.)

Book Reviews or Word of Mouth? Depends on what I want to read. I usually go by recommendations, title, first page, contents ...
