You remember that our flat is not exactly sound proof? Well, we've been toying with getting builders in to fill the gaps between the ceiling downstairs and our floor, but that would be mega-disruptive. Plus, builders. Nuff said.

Now, accidentally, before tossing one of the last home mags I bought, I leafed through it and saw a company mentioned: SoundReduction. Apparently, they do very good sound insulation underlay that local authorities and builders have been using to bring their conversions up to the latest sound-proofing standards. It looks like we're onto a winner here - all that needs to be done is get the underlay, fix it to our floor, cover it with special MDF, and then lay the laminate on top. My DIY god of a husband (the same one who plasters walls) reckons he can lay it himself. He's laid the laminate floor in the flat we used to live in in Bonn, covering 50 square metres or so, so he has plenty of experience.

The downside: even if we just get the material and do everything else ourselves, the new floor will still set us back at least a cool £1000 per room, everything included (adhesive etc.). Yet another reason why it's good to nurture those saving habits ... we will need roughly £4000 next year to re-do the flooring in living room and bed room, paint both rooms, and, most importantly, get some decent living room furniture from IKEA plus a couple of rugs.

That would be a good project to start tackling once I am on a more or less decent income again for at least a year or so and the credit card has been paid off. If I keep my book and convenience food habits in check, that shouldn't be too difficult - I have literally STACKS of great unread books in the attic, as [livejournal.com profile] awelkin knows. I will also need to keep my massage education habit in check, because I've already got five more seminars lined up for next year that I would love to do. So, why not see whether those babies can pay for themselves?
