One thing to do this year: FLY!
The books, I'm not sure I can help you. The non-fiction/Spiritual I would recommend is "Love's Redeeming Work" (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0191224766/qid=1104682023/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/026-4163619-2734850). It's a book to dip into - liturgy, poetry, prose, stuff to ponder. It's not easy, but it is very very beautiful. I gave away my copy, and I regret it. I suggest browsing it, if you get the chance, in SPCK or similar.

2) one brilliant piece of non-fiction to read this year
Either "How the Irish Saved CIvilization" or "The Complete Idiots Guide to WWII" (it's really much more informative than it sounds)
3) one piece of spiritual literature to read this year
"Standing for Something" by Gordon B Hinkley
4) one person to friend this year
I suggest my friend
5) one smooth, mellow artist to discover this year
I'm partial to Jim Fitzpatrick, but I don't suppose he is "mellow" - so I think I'll have to skip this one

I liked this book very much and I think it's quite sobering to read it now.
5) one smooth, mellow artist to discover this year
Eivør Pálsdóttir. An absolutely amazing singer from the Faeroe Islands. She often sings folk songs and is a little bit jazzy. You can listen to samples of her music on her site. And I should be able to burn for you her CD from 2001 if you are interested.

5) one smooth, mellow artist to discover this year: Blossom Dearie - she's a jazz singer with this awesome little girlish voice singing raunchy (and not so) standards. Her self-titled album is from around 1954 and it's awesome. Apparently she's still alive and doing gigs in the UK.
6) one thing to do this year: Walk a labyrinth

3) one piece of spiritual literature to read this year: Faith for the Future Colin Urquhart. I don't agree with many things in this book, but it is interesting. It's about a Christian Evangelical, so it's up to you.
4) one person to friend this year:
5) one smooth, mellow artist to discover this year: can't think of any
6) one thing to do this year: go to the British Library and examine the Treasures of the British Library. They are cool. And if you've done it before, you should do it again.

3) one piece of spiritual literature to read this year
Marlo Morgan, Mutant Message Down Under
This book was published as fiction, but is actually non fiction and very spiritual. The story is of a doctor who goes on walkabout with an Australian Aboriginal tribe and the spiritual lessons she learns from them.
