first of all, I hope all of you mothers on my friends list, [livejournal.com profile] angua9, [livejournal.com profile] shellebelle93, [livejournal.com profile] queenriley, [livejournal.com profile] ciircee, [livejournal.com profile] heidi8, [livejournal.com profile] anneu53714 and [livejournal.com profile] themorningstarr had a great Mother's Day. For [livejournal.com profile] themorningstarr, it came right after her graduation. Muchos kudos to you, girl!

I can't believe it. We are leaving for the States the day after tomorrow. I signed off an e-mail chat with [livejournal.com profile] dr_c with "See you on Thursday." I will see my twin, [livejournal.com profile] piperx next week, on Friday. A week after meeting her, I will have dinner with the amazing Murasaki99.

Oh, and there's the beautiful landscape. Yes.

Finally, blessed be Mapquest. So patient, as I consulted it time after time, hammering out routes and longer/shorter alternatives. You see, my husband will do all the driving, so I don't want to overstretch him. But then, he was a driver during his time in the army ...

Let me explain: in Germany, all men have to serve a compulsory year or so in the army.
They can refuse as conscientious objectors; their service is then completed somewhere in the
Social Services: Red Cross, old people's homes, etc.
There is a "get-out-of-jail free"-card: if you're a third son, or if your father did not return from WW II,
you are exempt. Thomas' younger brother was exempt - Thomas is the second of three boys.

Thomas was no conscientious objector. In fact,
he shows a boy's delight in everything that goes "Boom". So he served his time in the army
- working mostly as a driver, ferrying people to and from hospital. In case you were wondering what he thinks of Iraq: He hates that war.

Anybody recognised the movie that my "subject" refers to? Answers in red lipstick on a black stocking, please.
(There, now I've given it away ...)

even unexpected good things also...
discussion of army suggests that you
have a good many friends who think it
bad form to have been in army? :)
not 'militarist' in any way, but I
do not...

In Britain and America, serving time in the army is voluntary. Not so in Germany ...

That's what I felt I had to explain to my British, American and Australian friends -
otherwise they'll imagine I'm married to a corporal - which I'm not ... it's just
that my husband is mildly fascinated for medieval weapons and all things BOOM! and BANG! :)
you should have seen him in front of the trebuchet, the ancient siege weapon parked outside
Urquhart Castle.

It's almost the only strongly masculine trait in a very thoughtful, calm
and considerate man.

Boom!

well I would have been awful in the army
physically and in ways spiritually and
mentally no doubt, although I respect
the work as honorable and right(given our
situation at this level of being)
it was not mine...but damn it
I love to see things go boom in action
movies etc...
not as severely as a friend of mine fr
David Kossey, a gentle and deeply insightful
man, trained in psyciahtry , who knows a lot about pain and also has
a great many interests from landscape art
to music to archtecture etc etc but who
goes every wednesday to a gun club and has
a leather jacket won shooting pistol, and
his vacations? shooting woodchucks for farmers,
up at dawn lining them up at 100 meters or more
in the mist...
well of course the psychology is not far to
seek I suppose for all this booming but in my
case may I add Freddy the Pig,/b> a series
read in childhood with Mr Boomschmidt and his
circus a recurring character and the the circus
parade with the song..
Boomschmidt! Boomschmidt!
Boom! Boom! Boom!

Hi! Have a wonderful trip!

I am so sorry I didn't answer your Y!M yesterday. I seem to be having trouble with Y!M, I've even disinstalled and reinstalled it twice now and it doesn't seem to help. I wasn't ignoring you intentionally, I actually wasn't online and got your "Hi" as an offline message late last night. Sorry about that, sweetie! I didn't ignore you to be mean or anything, I just wasn't there.

Anyway, have a lovely trip! I should be around tonight (um ... 8 or 9 California time and later ... no idea what time that is for you, I am thinking sometime early in the morning) if you happen to be around. :D If not, have a wonderful time and say hi to the geysurs for me! XD

**hugs**

Have a great time! I wish you guys were coming close to Texas, but as you know, this is a big country. You're going to a great part of the US and I think you'll love it.
