Yesterday, I went to see a potential Reiki teacher ([livejournal.com profile] sit_good_dog will be pleased with me). She is fantastic. Even though she's been teacing for only three years, her approach is caring and thorough. We talked for forty minutes to determine whether Reiki and me were a good fit. She was very open about her background (NLP, hypnotherapy, Reiki), her teachers, and her plans (going into more massage-type body work). This is somebody who can assist you with the personal development work that is said to be connected with the attunement to Reiki. She runs student clinics every fortnight. But what's best is that she will ONLY give you the Reiki I certificate after you've done four case studies (*moan*) and shown your commitment through a month of regular meditation and journalling.

Well, what IS Reiki, you may ask. Before I met people who'd become attuned, I thought "humbug". But now I see it as a way of focussing loving attention on the person you are treating. To help you with that, you imagine that you are channelling a force of love.

I must admit that I've been a lot less sceptical about energy work since I've seen that it works. Homoeopathy and Shiatsu combined have powerfully brought me in touch with the person I was before I started to suppress everything in the name of not being bullied and rejected. I thought that "old me" was an object to be hated. Now I can access those parts of the old me that were actually good (and there were many of those), and integrate them into my older, more compassionate self.

Very interesting.

Reiki seems to me to be a different version of Christian Love. Have you ever been to a healing service at a Christian church where they do laying on of hands?

No qualifications but a capacity to love and be loved, and to accept the love of He who loves most. I know Wild Goose do a lot of training in this area, and publish a lot of materials.

How wonderfully put. Just reading that has put an entirely different slant upon my day. Thank you. x

It sounds like this teacher has an excellent approach. Like anything else, Reiki is something you have to study in order for it to be its most effective. You may find, like many people who study it, that the beginning awakening you've noticed between 'old' and 'new' is just the tip of the iceberg. There may be physical changes as well as psychological changes, and as you do the work and let the energy wash over you, you may find yourself becoming either more mellow or more vibrant or any combination thereof.

It's a wonderful thing.

It's more of a tapping in to Universal energy than anything else, and becoming a conduit for that energy. It can't be used for ill, only for good. It fits completely with the 'do no harm' mantra most Massage Therapists have sworn to.

I very much like the Reiki code and have it posted where I can read it multiple times a day:

Just for today, do not worry.
Just for today, do not anger.
Honour your parents, teachers, and elders.
Earn your living honestly.
Show gratitude to every living thing.

I am happy to hear about your healing! This is inspiring me to look into finding a good homeopath (if I can afford it). There seems to be a real difference between taking those homeopathic remedies one finds at the store and actually getting a homeopath to tailor a plan just for you. Reiki sounds like it would be something I might look into too (all depends, alas, on $). At any rate, there must be something I can do along those lines even if I can't afford the whole enchilada.

A good homoeopath will talk to you for at least an hour before prescribing any remedy. They match it very specifically to the current state of your mind and body. According to the homoeopath I've seen, off-the-shelf remedies are more or less useless.

Judging from the reaction I had the day after my chat with the teacher, I'm going to be more vibrant.

VERY interesting. Am going to hold back on buying any more Reiki books, though, until we've moved.

No, but I might. This type of service has been far too born-again for me. But then, I've felt drawn to the Iona Community, and I know that they have a Healing Ministry ...

Laying on of hands is one of the oldest parts of Christianity, and is often found in Catholicism (the cathedral at Newcastle used to advertise services)
