things to do before we move out (EEK)

This just promised to my landlady.

she also wanted us to take down the coat hangers in the hall way (before, the flat had no coat hangers to speak of), but I dissuaded her successfully, because then, we'd have had to repaint the entire hall way in addition to living room, bedroom, and the kitchen wall with all the appliances on it.

I'm now going to take stock of what we own, so that I can start to plan how to store it in the new place. There's quite a lot of mess caused by inadequate storage. For example, stacks of CDs near the computer because we don't have a CD rack there, same in kitchen (CD rack in inconvenient place for CD player). No good place to do bills & stuff, because kitchen storage is v. inconvenient (a huge pantry, two measly cupboards, and two sets of two shelves), and living room is expensive to heat.

I've also decided, thanks to much support by [livejournal.com profile] anguaorc and [livejournal.com profile] queenriley to get rid of loads of clothes and donate them to a local charity shop. Mostly, these clothes are sizes I don't NEED wear anymore (like British size 16 and 14, if you get my drift). And should I ever put on a stone in weight BAX on again, I might as well go out and get myself some nice new fashionable clothes.

This weekend will be PURGING TIME!

Against all better knowledge, though, I'm keeping my collection of Newsweek and unread Scientific American. I am not going to subscribe to the New Scientist, though, and after we're through with painting walls, I'll also stop my subscription to Die Zeit (huge intellectual newspaper that I don't have time to read. V. good for floor covering though. Only beat by Sunday Times.)

Oh boy, moving day approacheth! Take your time with the cleanup and painting and be careful of your backs. I've done a number of apartments in my day and was always proud the landlord was thrilled I left them so clean (evidently that's not usually the state people leave their apartments when they go.)

After I moved into my house I swore I'd never move again. Now after 10 years I think maybe I could, but I'd rather not. LOL. Enjoy the experience.

Good idea! I've been on a cleaning and reorganizing kick to make room for the new addition so if you need any ideas or encouragement, let me know.

You know how small my house is, yet I was really surprised to find how much more room I had when I actually organized things and used my limited storage in the most efficient ways (purchased portable shelves and layered bins to put inside the closets and cabinets or even under the bed).

We also have lots of DVDs to find room for. I think I may put them in an old trunk, cover the trunk with a nice tapestry and make it into a coffee table in the living room.

Of course, getting rid of stuff is the best way to make room. I think a good rule for clothes is that if you haven't worn it in the last year, get rid of it!

Hmm... but you probably should keep one or two outfits to wear for painting. ;-)

Have fun!
