so, trip to Germany almost over ...
Apr. 27th, 2004 06:07 pm... I will have a six hour train journey to Tilburg for doing some translations and reading and generally chilling out. Then WORX in Tilburg, and after that, catch the 17.02 to Schiphol.
Beat off fatigue to catch 21.20 flight BAX to Edinburgh.
I've invested quite a few Euros in order to travel in one of the shiny German ICE trains. They are beautiful, with lots of leg room and displays that show you the speed. Ah, the pleasure of overtaking Porsches on the nearby Autobahn ...
At the weekend, I had no net access. On Saturday, I travelled for 3 hours each way to see friends in the town where I used to work. I worked on the ICE train, two hours each way.
Then, on Sunday, a colleague had lent me her studio flat. So, I lazed, I prepared the talk I was due to give today, and I watched hours and hours of MTV while nominally reading papers and preparing a Powerpoint presentation. Mind-numbing, but good fun. Except that now I know all the new videos, I won't need another fix for quite a while ... :)
On Monday, a highly productive day presenting the work I do for a living to a colleague at Tübingen, and today, a talk in Stuttgart which went pretty OK. (The Powerpoint slides would have been much better.)
And I've finally updated my anonymous meme entry. Yay!
The weather has been amazing, and I have spent far too much money. I've tried to be frugal, but what with basic food, and my trip to see friends, and eating out ... I've spent more than 200 Euros. Ouch! (But that includes the towels I had to buy because I'd forgotten to pack them.)
I'd vowed that if I spent less than 100 Euros, I'd buy myself a book. No book for me! I have a Ph.D. thesis on clustering to read and papers on Machine Learning to look at, plus a book on Statistical Natural Language Processing (Manning/schütze, fact fans) that I've barely read. But two comics for my poor husband will definitely be purchased. Oh, we have been missing each other!

Date: 2004-04-27 04:15 pm (UTC)And re: towels, I read somewhere on the Quill (probably in a prehistoric travel thread) that the ultra-absorbent wiping cloths used on cars make good towels for people who are packing light. (Of course I read this after I came back from my trip and had forgotten to pack towels myself!)
Have a safe trip! (I suddenly want to go away somewhere on vacation...)
