These are some of the more contentious opinions you can expect when you read this journal. I respect people who hold different opinions, I will fight for your right to express them freely anytime, and I love to hear from anybody who disagrees with me. All I ask is that you respect my opinions, too, and trust that I don't intend to hurt you when I express them.

1) I'm pro-fetus-rights in the abortion debate.
2) I don't believe Jesus is/was God.
3) I have a very dark and twisted sense of humour.
4) I find incest, rape, and violence fics highly problematic - both in fanfic and in real fiction.
5) I'm anti-Bush, economically liberal. I used to be pro-Kohl when still living in Germany, but now I'm more pro-FDP. In Britain, I'd class myself as a Liberal Democrat.
6) I'm a feminist.
7) I'm comfortable discussing sexuality, and comfortable with sex before marriage.
8) I'm sceptical of the work of international aid organisations and charities.
9) I don't believe in Hell or Original Sin.
10) I'm pro R/Hr, not convinced by S/R, anti H/Hr.
11) I'm not in the HP fandom anymore. I left the day OotP was published.
12) I am for a public smoking ban.
13) I don't drink and I hate pubs.
14) Mothers with young "accidental" kids who smoke and shout at their kid make my blood boil.
15) I can't stand books and films with a sad, ambivalent, or tragic ending.
16) I'm a sucker for web sites that parody extreme fundamentalist views of all religions.

If you disagree with me on any or all of the above, you're more than welcome to read my journal, and I love to see you around - as long as you're fine with what you can expect. If you want to be spared some of the ranting, drop me a line and I'll be sure to lj-cut offensive material. If I don't cut something you find offensive, comment and I'll insert a cut.

1) I'm pro-fetus-rights in the abortion debate.
me too...
2) I don't believe Jesus is/was God.
(will just say I'm LDS and we believe God, Jesus and the Holy Ghost are three separate beings)
3) I have a very dark and twisted sense of humour.
You think so?
4) I find incest, rape, and violence fics highly problematic - both in fanfic and in real fiction.
Amen
5) I'm anti-Bush, economically liberal. I used to be pro-Kohl when still living in Germany, but now I'm more pro-FDP. In Britain, I'd class myself as a Liberal Democrat.
I'm a Conservative Republican
6) I'm a feminist.
I think I am too, but like you I'm atypical
7) I'm comfortable discussing sexuality, and comfortable with sex before marriage.
I'm fine with the former but not fine with the later
8) I'm sceptical of the work of international aid organisations and charities.
me too
9) I don't believe in Hell or Original Sin.
I believe in Hell, just not sure it's what most people think it is. And Mormons believe that Adam is responsible for his own sins.
10) I'm pro R/Hr, not convinced by S/R, anti H/Hr.
I am SO anti S/R - even though I can see how people want it to be, SIrius was a hottie in school! So was James! I am pro R/Hr (i think you know :D ) and I'm definitely pro G/H
11) I'm not in the HP fandom anymore. I left the day OotP was published.
I was disapointed in OotP, but I'm still in the fandom. I think that JKR is now making up the story as she goes along and trying SO hard to outsmart the fans, she won't do anything that she can find predicted on a website... this is a mistake IMO
12) I am for a public smoking ban.
not sure about this
13) I don't drink and I hate pubs.
I don't drink and I don't like bars... but I think pubs are different, aren't they?
14) Mothers with young "accidental" kids who smoke and shout at their kid make my blood boil.
I can imagine
15) I can't stand books and films with a sad, ambivalent, or tragic ending.
I am SO with you here - did you ever read my article on fantasy fans ant the happy ending?
16) I'm a sucker for web sites that parody extreme fundamentalist views of all religions.
I'm a sucker for funny pictures of animals

I guess I didn't know this. Interesting.

10) I'm pro R/Hr, not convinced by S/R, anti H/Hr.

Like many of my other friends, you and I get along because we don't argue ship. Actually I refuse to argue ship with anyone; my ship is my ship and I'll sail it forever :) So we'll agree not to try to convert each other.

2) I don't believe Jesus is/was God.
5) I'm anti-Bush, economically liberal.

Well, there you go. Two things I know we agree on!:)

Yeah. Why let ship debates ruin a great online friendship, I wonder?

And I haven't really been on any HP web sites after HP came out. I still talk Harry with friends, and I intend to finish reading the series. But I'm not really a fan anymore. The escapism has been lost.

1. I am getting there.
2. We disagree, but so what?
3. I love this about you.
4. Ditto, ditto, ditto.
5. Ditto on the US part.
6. Ditto.
7. Ditto.
8. Would love an entry on why. Never thought about it.
9. I do, but, again, so what?
10. Ditto.
11. I am not sure I was ever in the fandom. Don't know the requirements.
12. Ditto.
13. Ditto.
14. Not quite ditto, but I understand. I have come to find I have a great deal of compassion for people who have kids who were unplanned (Ean was unplanned--not unloved, but he came at a time in my life that was most challenging. It took a lot, but we got through it.)
15. It depends. Although, I will not stand for it with HP (like I can do anything about it!).
16. Haven't really gone to any.

I know one thing, my life is so much better for knowing you Maria! And you rant all you want!

I'm also tickled pink not only to know you, but to have met you, too!

As for unplanned kids - what I mind is not that they arrive without being planned; what I mind is people having kids and then proceeding to treat them like s***. Even if those kids are planned, usually for all the wrong reasons.

1) I'm pro-fetus-rights in the abortion debate.

Why is the pup is never considered prior to abortion? I think you're onto something.

I am also getting more and more anti- death penalty.

Hmmm, some days I feel absolutely Catholic.

On a side note, are Catholics more sexy than non-Catholics? I think so.

From: [identity profile] perceval.livejournal.com
well, Catholics can definitely be quite sensual - just look at the churches and listen to the music ...

And I'm with you on the anti-death penalty stance.

Sorry, OT, but I saw your icon... you're a Chamberlain fan??? I thought I was the only one! *glomps happily* I found and read a book of his Civil War memoirs and, wow. What a true hero. ^_^

Well, I stopped frequenting HP sites, and I haven't looked at the books after OotP came out. that said, I do fully expect to meet with people for vol 6 and 7 and for the remaining films - but because I enjoy being with friends more than anything else. And I DO want to know how the story continues - I'm just not enraptured anymore.

Your list sounds pretty darn good to me, ma'am.

Abortion is one of those problems both complicated and simple at the same time. Simple as in... if everyone had free acess to contraceptives and full control of her/his own body, then unwanted pregnancies would be a thing of the past. An unfortunate complicating fact is that many women in the world do not have full control over their bodies, nor access to contraceptives. A quick google search found this sobering statistic from the past: "In 1965 alone at least 193 women died from illegal abortions, with illegal abortion accounting for nearly 17 percent of all deaths due to pregnancy" This is for the US, and doesn't count suicides/murders due to an 'unfortunate' pregnancy.

For myself, if I had an 'unplanned' pregnancy, I doubt I would do anything to stop it, even at my age and with the attendant medical risk. But that's me and would be my decision based on my inner code and conscience. I would not presume to make such a decision for anyone else.

As for dark humor... that's the best kind! :-D

Apologies for boring on about the other thing.

So... in regards to #15, Have you read Susan Cooper's 'The Dark is Rising' series? It was great right up until the awful ending. Oy vey. *gnashing of teeth* <_<

You know, somebody asked me a question the other day. "Do I have the right to control my own body, or does the fetus have a right to be born?" Okay, so she was looking for me to tell her that she had a right to control her own body. And I did. She wasn't raped. She could have chosen not to have the sex that got her pregnant in the first place.

I truly think that when we make the decision to become sexually active, that we should be prepared to deal with the consequences of that decision.

That being said, I don't think that I have the right to force my beliefs on her.

So I guess I am personally pro-life and politically pro-choice, if that makes sense.
