My mum's here for 2.5 weeks to help me, and she's been a great help already - she cleans, cooks, and will take the baby to give me a rest. Our daughter is very alert now; if I don't carry her in the sling, she is so overstimulated by just being outside that she won't sleep - or at least not for long. If she's not in the sling, she alternatves between activity, food, and a snooze on mummy, with the sequence being snooze (feed, play)+ snooze. However, she will sleep at night in her sleeping bag in our darkened bedroom for 3-4 hours at a stretch.

She has developed a point of no return howl when she'll be in such a frenzy that only the boob will do - usually if she's been severely frustrated or uncomfortable for a couple of minutes. Nappy changes and dressing/undressing often set her off. These days, I try to calm her by rocking her and making soothing noises first - and by holding her over my shoulder, a good position for little babies with stuffy noses.

Baby is definitely in explorer mode now. She watches intently whatever is behind me while she's feeding. Her signature expression is the most exquisite little frown that says "Wait, where ... am I? Is that what I left 24/7 room service for?"

On the other hand, there's this new trick she first did when she was 4.5 weeks old, and which she now does at least once a day.

It's called "smiling".

Aww, sounds like you're getting along really well - am so happy for you :-) I've found that pretty much all babies prefer being upright to being rocked lying down, even if they're really tired.

*hugs*

Awwwww. The smiling is amazing, isn't it?

And also, y'know, good luck, just because I think anyone living with small children needs it. :)
