All fall down
Oct. 30th, 2005 07:06 pmOur baby took her first fall today. I was lying on the floor on my back, she was propped up against my knees, and I was fumbling for a cloth because she'd spat up all over me while she had some tummy time on Mummy. She lost what little balance she had, and fell straight onto our laminate floor. Seeing her lying there was a horrible, horrible sight. Right now, I'm more upset than she is. She howled for a grand total of one minute, until Daddy and the pacifier managed to calm her down. I've phoned NHS Direct now (24 hour info service) to check signs of concussion or trauma. And I've looked up falls on babycenter.com. I don't think anything serious happened, but still ... OMG, OMG, OMG. I will only be happy if I have my smily girl back tomorrow morning. Right now, she's bound to be irritable - it's evening, and this is when she alternates between feeding, napping, and complaining until she finally dozes off at 10 or 11pm and has a nice big sleep, from which she wakes at 7am, with a somnolent feed at 4am or 5am.
In slightly related news, I met the wonderful
mrsronweasley on Thursday. We talked life and babies, and I showed her the Elephant House.

Date: 2005-10-30 08:09 pm (UTC)When he was tiny, my brother managed to rock and flip his car seat off the kitchen counter onto the floor. My mother rushed him to the doctor, where she was given the same prognosis - baby was fine, mom was wasn't. It was the first of many, many falls for him (the last being two days ago, when he knocked half a tooth off while ice skating).

Date: 2005-10-30 09:55 pm (UTC)That's only the first of many little bumps and falls she'll have. Babies are very resilient. Still, I remember the first time Jack rolled off the couch (he was sitting up reading with Daddy), and it upset me terribly. Thankfully, when Ellen rolled off the bed, she landed on the dog. No harm done!

Date: 2005-10-30 10:31 pm (UTC)There will be many many more falls. Your heart will stop and your stomach will fall with each one, but you'll get better at judging true injury from fear from minor bumps.
*hugs* It does get easier. I promise.

Date: 2005-10-31 08:59 pm (UTC)But yeah, it's very scary for you. It does get easier though. Amelia falls or bangs into something pretty much on a daily basis. My philosophy is that if she doesn't cry, that's when you get really worried. The worse thing she did was when she was about a year, she was so full of energy, she ran along the couch and flipped right off the end, landing face first on top of a wrought iron magazine holder. She gave herself a bloody nose. That was pretty bad. But not bad enough to go to the hospital. The scariest for me was when she was sick and having breathing problems. I thought she might die in my arms. The hospital was no help whatsoever, although the actual ride to the hospital helped quite a bit (a shock of cold air will help with breathing problems).
Hang in there! (hugs(
