Child Development Update
Aug. 19th, 2007 05:41 pmSo, she's two now. And lots of things have happened. First, there's the two-word phase, which she entered with abandon a week before her second birthday last week. Now, it's "get up mama", "kaffee oma" (coffee grandma), "nass hose" (wet trousers) and all sorts of goodies. Her vocabulary's exploding all at the same time, with 1-3 new words per day. It could be that it was the sudden all-German immersion and 3-1 attention (mum, dad, grandparent) that did it, but it could also have been Time.
And to think that a month ago, her key worker at nursery explained to me that the only reason she was being kept at Tweenies a little while longer was her lack of language! I hope her new skills will translate to English soon.
She's growing and coming on in leaps and bounds. She's now 88.5cm tall, which makes her quite tall for her age. She had her first haircut yesterday. Just ends were cut, and her hair looks so much more tidy now.
We do get the odd tantrum, but nothing that wouldn't settle again in 1-5 minutes. Ignoring and distracting seems to work just fine. (Or maybe these are famous last words ... or maybe we're just so easygoing that we forget the really bad scenes ... or it could be that I diffuse strops too much by offering the breast. Whatever, breast works WITHOUT FAIL.)
Finally, she's started to self-settle after the evening feed, resulting in two unbroken nights in a row. Two unbroken nights in a row - the most we ever got for 24 months!
Her birthday was a bit of an anti-climax. We were at a conference in Germany. I had to give my talk at 9, then hung around until the end of the session. Next, a mad dash four hours north to meet up with my parents and DH's mother, whose cancer has returned and who is in chemotherapy. Two hours with grandparents, followed by four hours back. (In case you wonder, these four hours included a stop each way. And yes, I was DEAD the next day, despite not having been the driver.) No plans for a local party yet, as I'm away in Germany with her AGAIN and the week we return is punctuated by a conference trip.
Yikes! One of these days, you'll get a second birthday party, my girl ...
