Now that the US 2008 presidential race has really kicked in, which newspaper / magazine would you recommend for following developments? I only really have time for one, so please help me choose:

- Time
- Newsweek
- New Yorker
- New York Times online
- Other source

I deliberately haven't made this into a poll because I'd love to see the reasons for your rec.




1. Is there anyone on your friends list you would ever consider having sex with?
No.

2. Sex in the morning, afternoon or night?
Night.

Left.

4. Pork, beef, or chicken?
I much prefer pork, but I very rarely eat it.

5. Ever have to pull over on side of road to puke?
Yes, I get car sick when I read in cars. There were one or two incidents when I was a child, but I've learned my lesson.

No.

7. Shower or bath?
Shower, but I love reading and lounging in the bath.

No.

9. Mexican or Chinese?
Mexican.

10. Do you want someone aggressive or passive in bed?
Aggressive.

Yes.

No.

Cash.

I don't really wish she wasn't in my family, but I don't particularly like her. She probably feels the same way about me.

Five star hotel. I've never been camping, and I love creature comforts.

No particular weirdness to report, I'm afraid!

Depends on the sum.

No.

Never romantically.

My opinion is pretty uninformed, but my gut reaction to the magazines/publications you mention is that I'd take the NYT first - I really believe it's pretty fair and reasonable, and relatively comprehensive. The New Yorker is good and worth reading, but isn't reliable for a general survey of what's going on (rather than in depth and interesting articles about really specific things). Time and Newsweek seem pretty similar to me - fine as far as very general reporting that doesn't need to be particularly analytical goes; not particularly intelligent or investigative when it comes to anything beyond the mainstream.

There's also Slate, which I generally feel like is going downhill, but which still has some sharp commentary (if you can ignore the sensationlistic headlines it tries to stick on everything).

Of the ones you listed I prefer Newsweek - it's pretty silly and biased but not as badly as Time and it covers things in a more in-depth and coherent way than the NYT, which being a newspaper has to do everything piecemeal. The New Yorker has wonderful articles but is kind of random in what they write about and not at all complete or timely.

For timely day-to-day information, I'd recommend Josh Marshall's Talking Points Memo, which is an excellent online-only news blog with a moderately liberal Democratic-leaning stance and perhaps FireDogLake, which is a left-leaning opinion blog that also does original reporting. If you want a source with a conservative/Republican-leaning stance (and I don't know why you would!) Politico isn't too bad.

New York TImes - the only one on your list that is a newspaper, and should (theoretically) be unbiased and have equal and fair coverage.
