What a fantastic letter! Thanks for sharing. Amusingly, I stumbled upon "Daddy's Roommate" (mentioned in the letter) just a week ago, and found it to be a great book to normalize the subject matter. Also, I read a book that was surprisingly similar to "Uncle Bobby's Wedding" - again, about a week or two ago - to the girls. It was called Uncle Peter's Amazing Chinese Wedding; again, although it was about some of the cultural traditions surrounding a Chinese wedding, the main focus was that a little girl was afraid of "losing" her favorite uncle now that he was getting married. So - basically, the exact same story, and probably one the mother wouldn't have found objectionable at all. :P
Incidentally, I looked up Uncle Bobby's Wedding on Amazon. The characters aren't even human, which, IMO, makes the "gay marriage" thing even more subtle. I'm surprised she wasn't (also) objecting to the fact that Guinea Pigs were getting married. :P
Oh what an awesome letter! Thank you for the link. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will now be looking for that book in our local library. I'm sure Alex will love it. :D
I know some people who live in Douglas County. It includes Colorado Springs, which is a VERY conservative, Christian place. It's also one of the most affluent counties in the USA....
