a sense of pain
Aug. 20th, 2003 12:28 pm(This entry is motivated by several friends' recent posts)
When people lose all sense of pain, they are in grave danger. Because with the sense of pain, they also tend to lose a sense of their own body - where there is pressure, cold, or warmth.
When those people sleep, they develop sores all over their bodies, because they do not turn automatically when they have lain in one spot for too long. They don't notice the warning signs of a blocked head, or a muscle about to rip.
So what about people who are never depressed? Who never get into a funk, who always think positive? Well, such people tend to overestimate themselves, crash and burn.
Depression is a very bad place to be, though, especially if it's deep. That suggests that the wound is quite serious. Just as with serious damage to the body, you may need to get in somebody to help you heal the wound. That can be a naturopath, a GP, or a private specialist - a counsellor, a psychiatrist or a psychotherapist. The medication can be massage, talking therapy, drugs, exercise, a new job ...
Is it your fault if you break a leg? Is it your fault that you are depressed?

Date: 2003-08-20 07:39 am (UTC)I *so* needed to hear that.
I am feeling much better today though. I guess it is okay to have a bad day every now and again, and I shouldn't fault myself for having one.
Because I suppose if you think about it, you need the bad days to help you appreciate the good ones even more!
