Aug. 31st, 2003 09:30 pmRachel was so happy to be working for Jacob. Although he was her little brother, twelve years younger than her, in fact, she had always admired his energy. She'd spent hours running after him while her mother was working in the fields. Now that Jacob was grown, she still looked after him - laid out his clothes in the morning, prepared his breakfast, and now she was doing his accounts, as well. She was so grateful that Jacob had rescued her from the tilling, sowing, and reaping.
She had a meticulous handwriting, and an organised mind. When she first saw the state of Jacob's office, overflowing with invoices and receipts, she nearly fainted. But by the end of two afternoons and two very late nights, she had filed every scrap where it belonged, and he first twenty pages of the account book were filled with records of transactions. When Rachel had finished this labour of love, tears came to her eyes. The balance filled her with pride at Jacob's achievements. She resolved to support him to the best of her limited abilities. Then, she straightened her skirt, and went to bed.
Although Rachel had never been trained in accounting, she turned out to be more than a match for Jacob's financial affairs. Even though nobody from her family would have admitted it, Rachel was actually quite sharp, more so than any of her seven brothers. Of course, she herself would always deny that she possessed even a limited amount of understanding - after all, she was a woman, and Scripture said that women were the weaker sex, and needed to be guided through life by men.
Ok, this is the ficlet. Part three of the Rachel-and-Jacob saga. I actually have a storyline for this - no, it's not going to be the NaNoWriMo novel, but I might write it up as a short story one of these days.

Am angry with self. I should have worked at least two half-days this weekend because I am terribly behind with the work I am doing for my part-time job. Instead, I procrastinated and was unproductive. But I can do better tomorrow. Hopefully!
I also have a shiny new gadget to help me with planning my new part time portfolio life: a Filofax Pimlico personal pocket organiser. It's handy in that it can double as a purse. Let's hope I keep using it - I stopped using my last pocket organiser because it was too large to lug around with me. This one is so small that it fits into any handbag. It lets me keep todo lists and record expenses. And no, it's not electronic. Perish the thought. Even though I have a degree in computer science, I am actually very anti-electronic gadget.

Date: 2003-08-31 03:16 pm (UTC)Then, I got a Handspring PDA, and I must say, it was overall a great improvement. Yes, I did lose something - the tactile and visual pleasure of paper and writing and fine leather. But, there is no way I could go back.
Oh, maybe I would like to go back to customer service, it would be much better than being made redundant, for example.
