Ok, I booked flights and rental car for the niece's christening. Both came to a total of £360. I pointed out to the in-laws that since the trip to Germany was quite expensive for Thomas and me, we wouldn't lavish huge sums of money on niece on that occasion (like 200 Euros, which is 150 pounds). We're planning to spend 100 Euros instead for a savings account. Foot in mouth? Maybe. But I want them to appreciate that we are going to ... certain LENGTHS to attend.

Your gift is BEING there. That should be enough! :)

ITA on the gift being your presence. The savings account is a good idea.

If I was your relative I wauld apprecate the fact that you came to vist me and made the effort to come for the baby.

And you can allways do things for her later on.

I, too, agree that your presence is what's important, not your presents :) You are in effect spending the car rental, etc. money on the baby -- you're doing all that to come see her, after all.
