we are now trying to salvage the contents of the hard disk.

of course, given that our house is currently all in a mess, I haven't backed the thing up for AGES.

Hopefully you can salvage the hard disk - even if you can't boot from it, you may be able to set it up as a secondary drive in another PC, and transfer files from it that way

Yes, the hard disk is salvageable. Data is being transferrerd right now.

Would appreciate some laptop advice and some virtual hand holding via Y!M some time this afternoon.

My commiserations - I had my laptop's hard drive die completely on me last year; I had to hippity-hop to the computer repair shop to get it replaced. Luckily, I have a warranty. And very luckily I was able to back everything up.

Doesn't it seem as if computers die at the worst possible time?
