Yesterday evening, after a certain phone call, as I was bouncing around the flat to the mellow sounds of the James Bond theme tune, my husband observed: "You sure enjoyed talking to [livejournal.com profile] piperx." Oh, my darling can read me just fine :)

Alfonso Cuaron quote from the NYT:

"Harry Potter deals with class, with race, with power. I see this book as a metaphor for our times. The evil Voldemort is very similar to Saddam Hussein. Or George Bush. They're really the same. I believe George Bush and Saddam Hussein should go to a desert island together and relax. It would be a love affair, like in ''Y Tu Mamá También.'' And then there would be no war."

Even though I think Saddam is far worse than GWB, it's a fair comment with a badly needed sense of humour.

The German weekly Der Spiegel reports that anorexia now strikes more and more women in their 40's and 50's who want to recover their lost youth. That's a shame. Whenever I'm among older women, I'm reminded of the fact that women, especially those that have borne children, are *not* supposed to look like little girls. They are supposed to have curves, hips, a bum, a tummy, thighs, and boobs. What's wrong with looking normal?

I felt dizzy when I woke up today. It could be my usual cold-around-conception-time: make sure the immune system is all fired up so that we can safely reject any baby that dares to try to implant. Am leaving work early today.

You know, I think women have to take responsibility for the way they feel about themselves. I worked with a man who lost his wife to anorexia because she couldn't take turning 50. Come on people, wake up. Life is too short. Unless you spend every waking moment working on your looks, you won't look like you did twenty years ago. And who wants to do that? It's just not meant to be. I'm not a size 4 or 6 (working on being an 8 again) but I still manage to get some attention sometimes. Of course, I really only want it from one person, and I think my own self-image works in my favor.

Women can really be their own worst enemies. I have a friend who criticized Kathy Bates for appearing nude in About Schmidt. All women over 45 should be applauding her. Interestingly enough, my husband thought she was really sexy--because she projected that self-image.

Be happy and be healthy because you won't get any time back.

Feel better, Perceval.

You were a size 4-6? Wow!

And I really must check out About Schmidt. One of the advantages of being babyless - I can go to the cinema whenever I want :)

I was briefly a 6 a long long long time ago. I'll never be that again. I've always had problems with that, but I starved myself into a small size for a while.

It's true what he says about America's puritanical nature as evidenced by my embarrassment at some of the things he said in that interview. There's a lot of coming in the movie. *snicker* He doesn't mince words does he?

He's very exciting, though. I really can't wait to see what he does with PoA.

Sorry you're not feeling well. And sorry for the rest. Hang in there and try not to get depressed. JKR did it and she's way older than both of us. :)

I feel very lucky. Now, yes, I want to lose weight, my ultimate goal seems very low, but I am a very short woman with a small frame, so my goal is 115-125. It's attainable, if I work hard at it. I know this. But this is not what my whole self worth hinges on, though it does, at times, get a bit depressing. I am extremely lucky to have a husband who absolutely adores my form, even with all the flab, and stretch marks, and fat rolls. He lets me know this in any one of a hundred different ways every day. (And this is after nearly ten years of marriage!) The only reason he wants me to watch what I'm eating is because he wants me healthy, because I'm a diabetic. Believe me, if I didn't have diabetes, I was ready to give up completely on the diet thing and just make the most of my wonderful, voluptuous form! I have every one of the curves Percival listed: tummy, hips, bum, thighs, boobs. I'll always have them, no matter what; it's also a question of genetics. Mom had the tummy and boobs, Auntie gave me the thighs and butt. Who am I to argue with fate? ;-)
