Teh Shiny (i.e. a USB 2.0 enclosure for my notebook hard disk drive) arrived today after ordering it yesterday. Unpacked, unscrewed the HD from its notebook case, plugged it in - WORKS.

I think I will call Teh Shiny Gimli, in honour of the way in which it galloped to my aid as quickly as it could.

Note that yesterday @ PCWorld, the friendly sales staff (HAH) claimed that they did not sell kit to connect Laptop HDs to desktops, that such kit wasn't available via retail, and suggested that I should try eBay.

The MORONS.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] slowfox for vetting the solution, and to our local computer support guy for his help.

Yay, yay, and thrice yay!

PLUS you've now got a pretty nifty portably hard drive in its own right, too! Perfect for transferring data between machines via USB and stuff.

Am so pleased that worked out for you, and so relieved that you got your data BAX!

Hooray on getting your data back! Phew! I lost 6 months of work a couple years ago thanx to a total HD failure and that wasn't pretty.

I'm still moving data from old PC to new. So much to do to get a new machine fully set up. But... I got an external HD with USB and firewire connectors to act as a hot backup for my stuff. So if the gods are kind, no more bad crashes. :-D

backups are good.
so are CD writers for backup.
but even more so DVD writers!

did you try sending that HD to one of the HD recovery places? what happened to it?

that must have been AWFUL

Well, I discovered last week that just because you've backed up your stuff to CDs doesn't mean your new machine will read them. Right now I'm transferring data via USB memory keys - works like a charm.

My drive just crashed and died. The PC was under warranty with Dell, so the repair guy came out and gave me a new drive and even reinstalled Windows ME. But my data went bye-bye with the dead drive. Data recovery companies typically charge $5K and up to recover data from a drive. Not worth it to recover some fanart. But now I back up a little more frequently than once every six months. :-\

USB keys are getting cheap - got a 256MB Sandisk key for $50. The USB ports on my new machine don't all seem to be working right, however, so now I'm contemplating a call for onsite service if I can't get it sorted out. Always something. :-P

At least now pretty much all my current art is on two PCs - a rather rude form of backup.

That's really good news! Glad you didn't lose all your data, and that you managed to get it sorted quite quickly :-)
