pottersginny ... I wonder. My first reaction to her LJ was compassion. Why, oh why, is she filled with such hate? Look at her mood icons. Almost always angry or aggravated.
The second reaction was: What would Jesus say to her views?
The third: look at what a too literal interpretation of the *whole* bible can do to you.
Buddhism and Christianity taught me not to counter hate with hate, but with love.
In fact, Buddhism teaches us to love and respect all beings, including cockroaches, fluffy kittens,
and people like
pottersginny.
They might be our teachers.
That said, would I like to be friended by
pottersginny? No.
But you know what? I'll pray for her - and for me, so that I may never become as close-minded as her.
Lord Jesus, have mercy on us.

That's a good way to look at it.
But, I really don't think she's authentic. I think it's just someone who's created this persona in order to make Gryffindor Tower and/or H/G look bad. Just my opinion.

Date: 2003-05-09 06:48 pm (UTC)Her journal is very new which is a source of suspicion. There were some other things she said which made me wonder but since then, I've read some things which make me think she's for real. I guess I don't know. Angua thinks she's genuine and she knows loads more than me, :) so I could be wrong.

Date: 2003-05-09 06:47 am (UTC)I'm a little too angry right now at her criticism of mixed marriages to share your enlightened viewpoint, but it does you credit. You are a good person, and you get my big Christian gold star of the day. :)
Feh! Why do people like this speak up the most for Christianity? This is the reason why many of us do not run down the street yelling I'm Christian! We have to put up with the stereotype legacy left to us by these sorts of people.

Date: 2003-05-09 07:00 am (UTC)... and I'm not as angry as you because I don't have as many friends in mixed-race marriages or
non-Caucasian friends and have never really seen racism. So it's (rather too)
easy to be a good Christian for me on that issue :)
I guess when people say the Net's anti-Christian they really just state the obvious: the Net's mostly liberal,
and doesn't welcome intolerance of the sort we've seen here.

Date: 2003-05-09 07:14 am (UTC)I got to hear it from both sides though.
The good thing about it is... I don't consider myself "mixed race" - I'm American. I can be a mutt - that's what this place is all about - right? I know more and more mutts like me... and I hope people keep making MUTTS! The only way to get rid of the racism is for there to be no races. BUT, that being said... we'll just find another thing to be prejudiced about..
You summed it up perfectly . . .

I've been a netaholic since my graduation from uni in '95, and I do find that "the 'net" (to the degree that it can be generalised) is anti-Christian- but only because angry, vocal, literalistic Christian fundamentalism has come to represent mainstream Christianity in the eyes of many.
The Net's mostly liberal and anti-intolerance; many view Christianity as being intrinsically conservative and intolerant; so many are thus anti-Christian, which ironically can lead to some interesting displays of intolerance.
Sad, really.

Date: 2003-05-09 11:13 am (UTC)Thanks for reminding me how a Christian should approach someone like PottersGinny. I read the journal (fortunately it was after reading yours), so I kept your words in mind as I read hers, which is the only thing that kept me from ranting in her LJ. Although, I see that 50 people ranted for me.
People like that give conservatism, Christianity, and H/G a bad name. (Not that I'm the least bit conservative, but not all conservatives are bad). Her intolerance runs so deeply that arguments to show her ignorance will fall on deaf ears.
Sigh. How sad. How very very sad.

Date: 2003-05-09 11:54 am (UTC)A friend told me that this sort of attire was fashionable among fundamentalists.
And yes, I probably had the very same uncharitable thoughts. Like, the Eighties have been over for several years now, honey.
So I'm not such a good person after all, you see.
