... I'd like to go to the States, something that will be difficult with a baby, but extremely feasible now.

We'd be very much swimming against the stream, what with the current mood in Europe. Now, I only have to persuade my husband, who's not too enamoured with the U.S. of A. But I hope some pics of beautiful countryside will be enough. I will also need to remind him that the States are a very large and diverse country where every single state has quite different characteristics. (True?)

We'd be focussing on the North-West, because of the temperatures (low) and the scenery (beautiful). (Personally, I like it hot, but my husband feels cooked when the temperatures rise much above 20 Celsius. He's also a country type, not a city type.) Ah yes, and because of the pleas of Lonely of Montana. You know who you are.

We'll see. Maybe Iceland will win out in the end. Wish me luck!

EDITED to say:

Happy Birthday Frankie!!!!!!!!!!

*pouncehugs and glomps*

May God be with you during the next year of your life.

I can give you both city and country in one huge beautiful State (which I can obviously tote you around in and suggest all kinds of wonderful things). We don't have Hollywood - but we have th Alamo, a great aquarium , some theater - great nightlife - GREAT an FABULUOS countryside - everything from desert to swamp...

And we are only 2 hours from the bayous of Louisiana

hmmm - would be quite a trek down from Montana. Must check with hubby - depends on the amount of driving he'll do :) I can't drive myself.

Texas did cross my mind, but what about the temperature in May? And what about taking a staunchly anti-war husband down to the Bible Belt?

LOL - well, as long as he wasn't wearing a sign - I don't think the anti war thing would matter. May is the last good month to visit. End of May things start to get hot and this is me talking - so I don't know about the tollerance to heat - 60 F is very cold for me. May tends to be in the 80's - but the flowers are amazing.

If you really need something milder for weather - Montana is better I suppose. Though... what in the blazes is there to do in Montana??? You want to see America, there are only 3 places to go - New York, Los Angeles, or Houston (maybe if you wanted to see a cartoon version, you'd go to Orlando).

*AHEM!* There are lots of wonderful things in Montana especially if you like the outdoors. There are mountains to hike and camp in in the summer and ski and snowmobile through in the winter. There is lots of nature unspoiled by human greed. Wildlife watching. Some of the best fishing in the country. We also have two of the most spectacular National Parks in the world (Yellowstone and Glacier).

Ah, but you're right. There isn't really all that much here. No big-city smog. No bumper-to-bumper rush hour traffic. No fear from an impending terrorist attack. Relatively little crime. No snipers. No rat race. Yep. None of that.

;)

No amusement parks, no Theaters, no Baseball, no Rodeo Houston, (Houston doesn't have smog, BTW), no major airports, no wetlands to speak of, no major entertainment venues, no orchestra, and isn't filled with refugee Canadians ;)

And when did we have snipers? You don't pull a gun in Texas unless you are willing to get shot back...

But.. Yup... I'm agreeing with you ;)

Hey now! We *do* have big entertainers here in Montana. Bob Dylan (!) was here six years ago. We've had big up-and-coming bands like Def Leppard not to mention Midget Wrestling. Heh. What else do you need?

We *do* have an orchestra and it's top notch! And when those kids finish elementary school, they're going to be even better.

Who needs amusement parks? We've got the endless miles of highway with no speed limit. ;)

And the refugee Canadians have mostly been edged out by the SUV-driving, refugee Californians.

(Okay, I lied. The powers-that-be reinstituted our speed limits a few years ago but I prefer not to remember this fact.)

Good luck working out plans - I'm very jealous, I'd love to visit the US. :)

Hrm. If you were to go in June, and wanted outdoors things to do, I'd recommend my area, actually. I realise that I'm biased, but really, it's stunning, and summer is fantastic. June is usually perfect--it gets too hot in August.

http://www.marquette.org/

(My hometown, but there're lots of other places to go. Canada, too. If you want to do outdoorsy things, Pukaswa is fantabulous)

It's all outdoors. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful--and some of the most pristine woods in the USA. Plus, we're right on the second biggest freshwater lake in the world. (And we even have Cornish pasties. Hee.)

Honestly, as I said, though I'm biased, the area is one of the United States' hidden treasures.

Ssounds like quite an adventure - I'm a big fan of New York, but if hubby likes countryside and temperate clime, how about Connecticut or New England.

Good luck with the persuasion and the choice.

Well, Iowa is best visited in May or early June. It is surprisingly pretty, but in the summer surprisingly hot.

It would certainly satisfy your husband in terms of country, however, and I would be happy to show you about our part if you were to come here. We have a lovely house with a guest room.

In the Northwest, my favorite place is Portland. I recommend it highly.

I'm in Massachusetts! (Which is okay really, but...) We vacation every year in Maine! Mount Desert Island, Maine, to be exact. And this is where we hang out while we're there: <http://usa.visitmaine.com/region/region_downeast.php> I know I probably wouldn't get to see you while you were there, but I felt I just had to let you know about one of the most beautiful places on God's green earth. My parents grew up there and I spent a portion of every summer there. If you want more pics, go on Google and do an image search on Acadia National Park. The second page especially has some exquisite pictures.

And Montana and other places are beautiful too, but I wanted to tell you about a place I consider just a few feet shy of Heaven, my second home. Can you tell I really need a vacation?

You're being pulled in all different directions, aren't you? *resists urge to kick away other posters vying for your visit*

You're right -- the States are very large and diverse. My own opinion, which is completely unbiased of course, is that the Northwest is the most beautiful area. The lovely Pacific Ocean provides fresh seafood to the coastal areas and expanses of mountains cover the rest of the area. I've heard that British Columbia is really very beautiful also (not to mention non-warmongering.)

Let me know what you'd like to see and I'll plan your itinerary for you. ;)
